Background information
Ginnungagap means: the abyss of Ginn. Ginn is Old Norse and means magic or enchantment. It corresponds to the Sanskrit TAT, which means THAT: Parabrahman in Hinduism, the One in Platonism, Tao in Taoism, or the unnameable principle from H.P. Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine. Ginnungagap is the chasm of apparent emptiness – matter-free space, the void, or Śûnyatâ (emptiness in Sanskrit). Originally, it is the yawning abyss in the creation story of the Edda.
The northern part of Ginnungagap was filled with heavy masses of ice, frost, rain, and icy winds. The southern part was lit by sparks and glowing embers flying in from Muspelheim. When the scorching heat covered the ice and frost, they began to melt and drip. Life arose from the cold drops. From Ginnungagap, the worlds began to spontaneously condense.

Het komt overeen met het Sanskriet TAT, dat DAT betekent: Parabrahman in het hindoeïsme, het Ene in het platonisme, Tao in het taoïsme, of het onnoembare beginsel uit H.P. Blavatsky’s Geheime Leer. Ginnungagap is de kloof van schijnbare leegte – materievrije ruimte, het niets, of Śûnyatâ (leegte in het Sanskriet). Oorspronkelijk is het de gapende afgrond in het scheppingsverhaal van de Edda.
Het noordelijke deel van Ginnungagap was gevuld met zware ijsmassa’s, vorst, regen en ijskoude winden. Het zuidelijke deel werd verlicht door vonken en gloeiende sintels die uit Muspelheim kwamen aanvliegen. Toen de hete gloed het ijs en de vorst bedekte, begonnen deze te smelten en te druppelen. In de koude druppels ontstond leven. Vanuit Ginnungagap begonnen de werelden spontaan te condenseren.

My work is an artistic representation of this idea. I see it as a symbol of life within life, of interconnectedness, of streams within streams: Panta Rhei.

Background information
Cosmic Flower or Flower of Life: everything is infused with the same life. The harmony and beauty we see in flowers can make us marvel at what life can produce in the way of beauty.
A flower can be seen metaphorically as an expression of cosmic life – an ancient Eastern idea of life within life, spheres within spheres. The realization that everything is permeated by one life, which differentiates, manifests, and cooperates in various ways.

Cosmic Flower of Flower of Life: alles is doortrokken van hetzelfde leven. De harmonie en schoonheid die wij in bloemen zien, kan ons laten verwonderen over wat leven aan schoonheid kan voortbrengen.
Een bloem kan metaforisch worden gezien als een uitdrukking van kosmisch leven – een oud oosters idee van leven binnen leven, sferen binnen sferen. Het besef dat alles doordrongen is van één leven, dat zich op verschillende manieren differentieert, manifesteert en samenwerkt.
This, That and beyond

Background information
In Sanskrit, TAT means THAT, referring to the unnameable – a living force or principle behind manifestation, infinite and boundless, yet impossible to name because it encompasses everything. We can reflect on it and form an image of it, but that is only a glimpse of this boundless principle. There is always more: greater, more all-embracing. In contrast, THIS is the manifested – that which can be named.
Eastern mysticism highlights the idea of the “beyond” – the transcending of boundaries. Âtman, for example, is our highest self, our source, our spiritual parent. But beyond Âtman lies Paramâtman – the boundlessness and the infinite. Wherever there is a boundary, something always lies beyond it.
This image symbolises permeating spheres each other, with a vertical line. That line symbolises the flow of boundless consciousness: the Sutrâtman, or thread Self, descending through different realms or spheres. We are that stream of consciousness. And there is more. What is outside this cave?

In het Sanskriet betekent TAT ‘DAT’, met de betekenis van het onnoembare – een levende kracht of beginsel achter de manifestatie, oneindig en grenzeloos, maar niet te benoemen omdat het alles omvat. We kunnen erover nadenken en er een beeld van vormen, maar dat is slechts een glimp van dit grenzeloze beginsel. Er is altijd meer: groter, veelomvattender. Daarentegen is DIT het gemanifesteerde, dat wél benoemd kan worden.
Oosterse mystiek belicht het idee van het ‘voorbij iets’, het overstijgen van grenzen. Âtman, bijvoorbeeld, is ons hoogste zelf, onze bron, onze spirituele ouder. Maar voorbij Âtman ligt Paramâtman – de grenzeloosheid en het oneindige. Waar een grens is, ligt altijd iets daarbuiten.
Deze afbeelding symboliseert sferen die elkaar doordringen, met daarin een verticale lijn. Die lijn staat symbool voor de stroom van grenzeloos bewustzijn: het Sutrâtman, ofwel het draadzelf, dat door verschillende gebieden of sferen afdaalt. Wij zijn die stroom van bewustzijn. En er is meer. Wat bevindt zich buiten deze grot?
Connecting the Dots

Background information
Connectedness. A twig from the World Tree – the idea that everything, from the roots to the leaves, forms one whole. The World Tree is often depicted with its roots pointing upward and its leaves and branches hanging downward.
The idea of connecting the dots is also used symbolically to suggest that we can learn to see the connections between all things. That is why it is sometimes encouraged to actively seek out these connections and to learn to recognize the unity in everything. According to Eastern wisdom, experiencing this unity can inspire us to become compassionate and to follow the example of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Compassion.

Verbondenheid. Een twijg van de Wereldboom – het idee dat alles, van de wortels tot de bladeren, één geheel vormt. De Wereldboom wordt vaak afgebeeld met de wortels omhoog en de bladeren en takken omlaag.
Het idee van connecting the dots wordt ook symbolisch gebruikt om aan te geven dat we de verbanden tussen alles kunnen leren zien. Daarom wordt soms geadviseerd om actief naar deze verbindingen te zoeken en de eenheid in alles te leren herkennen. Volgens oosterse wijsheid kan het ervaren van deze eenheid ons aanmoedigen om mededogend te worden en het voorbeeld te volgen van de Boeddha’s en Bodhisattva’s van Mededogen.

Background information
The tetractys of Pythagoras shows how from the one comes the many. From the one comes the 2, from that the 3, and then the 4. Together they form a 10. The number 10 represents perfection: an organic whole - a hierarchy of life working together in harmony. A universe, for example, or any consciousness.
The tetractys also symbolises the idea that the same universal life flows through everything. Hence "Unity in Diversity". No distinction in colour, race, sex, gender or any consciousness.
The ancient myths and Pythagoras show us that the same boundless, infinite life is present in everything. Through altruism, compassion and the search for wisdom, we can develop more and more of that limitless life within ourselves - and thereby inspire the world.

De tetractys van Pythagoras toont hoe vanuit het ene het vele ontstaat. Vanuit het ene ontstaat de 2, daaruit de 3, en vervolgens de 4. Samen vormen zij een 10-voud. Het getal 10 staat voor volmaaktheid: een organisch geheel – een hiërarchie van leven die in harmonie samenwerkt. Bijvoorbeeld een heelal, of eigenlijk elk bewustzijn.
De tetractys symboliseert ook het idee dat hetzelfde universele leven door alles stroomt. Vandaar: ‘Unity in Diversity’. Geen onderscheid in kleur, ras, geslacht, gender of welk bewustzijn dan ook.
De oude mythes en ook Pythagoras tonen ons: hetzelfde grenzeloze, oneindige leven is in alles aanwezig. Door altruïsme, mededogen en het zoeken naar wijsheid kunnen wij steeds meer van dat grenzeloze leven in onszelf tot ontwikkeling brengen – en daarmee de wereld inspireren.
Waringin II

Background information
A Waringin Tree with Aerial Roots, which, once they touch the ground, grow into new trees – still connected to the parent tree. The idea of the Waringin (or Banyan tree) comes from Buddhism and symbolizes the cooperation of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Compassion, who transmit Universal Wisdom and help humanity to discover the better in themselves.
The river flowing from the light in the background is a symbol of the transmission of wisdom. In various cultures, the river is seen as a sacred symbol – for example, think of the Ganges.
The background in which this river flows represents the cosmic web: a zoomed-out depiction of our cosmos. The universe is filled with immense strands of matter stretching between galaxies like a vast web. It is the three-dimensional, filament-like structure of intergalactic gas and dark matter. At the intersections of these strands, where density is highest, galaxies are found. This structure of the web resembles that of our brain cells. As above, so below.

Het idee van de Waringin (of Banyan boom) komt uit het boeddhisme en staat symbool voor de samenwerking van de Boeddha’s en Bodhisattva’s van Mededogen, die Universele Wijsheid doorgeven en de mensheid ondersteunen bij het ontdekken van het betere in zichzelf.

De achtergrond waarin deze rivier stroomt, verbeeldt het kosmisch web: een ver uitgezoomde voorstelling van onze kosmos. Het universum zit vol met enorme slierten materie die zich tussen sterrenstelsels uitstrekken als een groot web. Het is de driedimensionale, draderige structuur van intergalactisch gas en donkere materie. Op de knooppunten van deze draden, waar de dichtheid het hoogst is, bevinden zich de sterrenstelsels. Deze structuur van dit web lijkt op die van onze hersencellen. Zo boven, zo beneden.
Odin's Eye

Background information
In Scandinavian mythology, Odin is the chief god. Odin discovers the Well of Wisdom – the well of the giant Mimir. Mimir allows Odin to take a sip from the well, but in return, he asks for one of Odin’s eyes. Odin agrees and gives up his eye, which then comes to rest at the bottom of the well.
A parable: We can draw Wisdom from the deepest part of our inner being, while still perceiving the struggles of those around us. That inner Wisdom urges us to act altruistically.

In de Scandinavische mythologie is Odin de oppergod. Odin ontdekt de bron van Wijsheid – de bron van de reus Mimir. Mimir staat Odin toe om een slok uit die bron te nemen, maar vraagt in ruil daarvoor één oog. Odin stemt toe en staat zijn oog af. Het komt op de bodem van de bron te liggen.
Een parabel: Wij kunnen uit ons diepste innerlijk Wijsheid putten, terwijl we tegelijkertijd de moeilijkheden van onze medemensen om ons heen blijven waarnemen. Die innerlijke Wijsheid spoort ons aan om altruïstisch te handelen.

A river, combined with a Waringin tree with aerial roots that, once they touch the ground, become trees themselves. A river is often used as a symbol for the transmission of Universal Wisdom – think, for example, of the Ganges.
The idea of the Waringin comes from Buddhism. The tree is a symbol of the cooperation between the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Compassion, who transmit Universal Wisdom and support humanity in discovering the better within themselves.
