Many know the surface of this ocean, yet grasp nothing of its depths. The home we are looking for lies in eternity. The truth we are looking for is like an ocean without shores.
Farid ud-Din Attar c. AD 1145 – 1221

Both worlds, the higher and the lower, are like a drop of water that is and is not. In the beginning a drop of water revealed itself, and then it took on many beautiful forms. All that appears is like water.

Ware schoonheid is verborgen.
True beauty is hidden. Seek it then, in the invisible world. If the veil that hides the mysteries from our eyes were to fall, nothing would remain in the world. Every visible form would dissolve into nothing.

The Beginning has vanished. The End reaches into eternity. Do not trouble yourself over them; beginning and end do not matter. And since everything is in truth nothing, nothing is in truth everything. No traveller has ever seen the end of this journey.
Farid ud-Din Attar c. AD 1145 – 1221

Lao-Tse 6e eeuw v.C.
Thirty spokes meet in a single hub, but it is the empty space that makes the cart useful. A pot is shaped from clay, but it is the empty space that makes the pot useful. Doors and windows are cut out for a house, but it is the empty space that makes the house useful. So we benefit from what is there, but emptiness makes it useful.
Lao Tzu 6th century BC

What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.
Richard Bach Illusions, 1977
Richard Bach Illusionen, 1977
Background information
Unseen is inspired by the invisible force behind everything. This force is known by various names in myths and spiritual traditions, such as the One, Tao, Tat, Paramatman or Ginnungagap. Everything flows forth from this One: universes and worlds come into being and eventually dissolve back into it. This process of emanation – whereby the many unfold from the One – can be compared to seeds that sprout, grow and bear fruit. Hence the title: Fruits of Boundlessness.
The left side of the work symbolizes the primordial chaos, the cosmic waters from which universes are born. Moving to the right, this transforms into an inverted tree, which is rooted in the infinite and has branches and leaves that symbolise our world. This image represents the World Tree as a hierarchical network of life.
Our own world is also an emanation of the One. Although it seems tangible, it is essentially an illusion since the forces behind it remain unseen. What we do know is that our manifestation is made up of atoms, which consist of ever smaller particles. This concept is represented on the right by shapes that resemble water molecules — for without water, life would not be possible. Yet even that remains an abstraction. What, ultimately, are life and consciousness?
Unseen – Fruits of Boundlessness is composed of macro photographs of fruit peels, poured paint and a handmade sketch, which have been digitally edited.
Achtergrondinformatie

In the earliest times, when nothing was: no sand, no sea, no cooling waves. There was no earth, and no sky above – only Ginnungagap, the yawning void, and grass nowhere. There it was as mild as windless air. And when the warmth touched the frost, so that it melted and dripped, the drops quickened into life.
Snorri Sturluson, Prose Edda c. AD 1220

Chr.
Background information
Ginnungagap means: the abyss of Ginn. Ginn is Old Norse and means magic or enchantment. It corresponds to the Sanskrit TAT, which means THAT: Parabrahman in Hinduism, the One in Platonism, Tao in Taoism, or the unnameable principle from H.P. Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine. Ginnungagap is the chasm of apparent emptiness – matter-free space, the void, or Śûnyatâ (emptiness in Sanskrit). Originally, it is the yawning abyss in the creation story of the Edda.
The northern part of Ginnungagap was filled with heavy masses of ice, frost, rain, and icy winds. The southern part was lit by sparks and glowing embers flying in from Muspelheim. When the scorching heat covered the ice and frost, they began to melt and drip. Life arose from the cold drops. From Ginnungagap, the worlds began to spontaneously condense.
Achtergrondinformatie

Cosmic Flower or Flower of Life: everything is infused with the same life. The harmony and beauty we see in flowers can make us marvel at what life can produce in the way of beauty.
A flower can be seen metaphorically as an expression of cosmic life – an ancient Eastern idea of life within life, spheres within spheres. The realization that everything is permeated by one life, which differentiates, manifests, and cooperates in various ways.
Achtergrondinformatie
Cosmic Flower of Flower of Life: alles is doortrokken van hetzelfde leven.

In Sanskrit, TAT means THAT, referring to the unnameable – a living force or principle behind manifestation, infinite and boundless, yet impossible to name because it encompasses everything. We can reflect on it and form an image of it, but that is only a glimpse of this boundless principle. There is always more: greater, more all-embracing. In contrast, THIS is the manifested – that which can be named.
Eastern mysticism highlights the idea of the “beyond” – the transcending of boundaries. Âtman, for example, is our highest self, our source, our spiritual parent. But beyond Âtman lies Paramâtman – the boundlessness and the infinite. Wherever there is a boundary, something always lies beyond it.
This image symbolises permeating spheres each other, with a vertical line. That line symbolises the flow of boundless consciousness: the Sutrâtman, or thread Self, descending through different realms or spheres. We are that stream of consciousness. And there is more. What is outside this cave?

Marcus Aurelius 121 – 180 n.C.
All things are interwoven with one another, and the bond that joins them is sacred. Virtually nothing stands apart from anything else: all things are ordered together and together make up one and the same world.
Marcus Aurelius AD 121 – 180
Mark Aurel 121 – 180 n. Chr.
Background information
Connectedness. A twig from the World Tree – the idea that everything, from the roots to the leaves, forms one whole. The World Tree is often depicted with its roots pointing upward and its leaves and branches hanging downward.
The idea of connecting the dots is also used symbolically to suggest that we can learn to see the connections between all things. That is why it is sometimes encouraged to actively seek out these connections and to learn to recognize the unity in everything. According to Eastern wisdom, experiencing this unity can inspire us to become compassionate and to follow the example of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Compassion.
Achtergrond informatie
Verbondenheid.

Though you seem to see many beings, in truth there is only unity: everything forms a single whole, perfect in its oneness. And yet what you see as unity is no different from what appears as multiplicity.
Farid ud-Din Attar c. AD 1145 – 1221
Chr.
Background information
The tetractys of Pythagoras shows how from the one comes the many. From the one comes the 2, from that the 3, and then the 4. Together they form a 10. The number 10 represents perfection: an organic whole - a hierarchy of life working together in harmony. A universe, for example, or any consciousness.
The tetractys also symbolises the idea that the same universal life flows through everything. Hence "Unity in Diversity". No distinction in colour, race, sex, gender or any consciousness.
The ancient myths and Pythagoras show us that the same boundless, infinite life is present in everything. Through altruism, compassion and the search for wisdom, we can develop more and more of that limitless life within ourselves - and thereby inspire the world.
Achtergrond informatie
Vandaar: ‘Unity in Diversity’.

All human beings are limbs of one body, created from one and the same source. When one limb is in pain, the others can find no rest.
Saadi c. AD 1210 – 1292
Chr.
Background information
A Waringin Tree with Aerial Roots, which, once they touch the ground, grow into new trees – still connected to the parent tree. The idea of the Waringin (or Banyan tree) comes from Buddhism and symbolizes the cooperation of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of Compassion, who transmit Universal Wisdom and help humanity to discover the better in themselves.
The river flowing from the light in the background is a symbol of the transmission of wisdom. In various cultures, the river is seen as a sacred symbol – for example, think of the Ganges.
The background in which this river flows represents the cosmic web: a zoomed-out depiction of our cosmos. The universe is filled with immense strands of matter stretching between galaxies like a vast web. It is the three-dimensional, filament-like structure of intergalactic gas and dark matter. At the intersections of these strands, where density is highest, galaxies are found. This structure of the web resembles that of our brain cells. As above, so below.
Achtergrond informatie

Beneath a root of the world tree Yggdrasil lies Mímir's well, in which wisdom and understanding are hidden. All-Father came there and asked for a single drink from the well, but he was given none until he had left his eye in pledge.
I know it all, Odin, where you hid your eye: in the far-famed well of Mímir.
Snorri Sturluson, Prose Edda c. AD 1220

Chr.
Background information
In Scandinavian mythology, Odin is the chief god. Odin discovers the Well of Wisdom – the well of the giant Mimir. Mimir allows Odin to take a sip from the well, but in return, he asks for one of Odin’s eyes. Odin agrees and gives up his eye, which then comes to rest at the bottom of the well.
A parable: We can draw Wisdom from the deepest part of our inner being, while still perceiving the struggles of those around us. That inner Wisdom urges us to act altruistically.
Achtergrond informatie

With its roots above and its branches below, there stands the eternal fig tree. It is the pure, it is Brahman, it alone is called the immortal. In it all worlds rest; no one goes beyond it. This, truly, is That.
Katha Upanishad c. 5th – 1st century BC
– 1. Jahrhundert v.Chr.
